[How we work](https://arbocode.com/process)

A modern retail register does much more than ring up an item. In one transaction, a customer might pick up an online order, return a different item bought on the website, and ask whether loyalty points cover part of today's purchase. A POS that treats the store and the online store as separate systems forces the associate to turn the customer away or patch the gap with a manual workaround that the finance team has to untangle later.

The retail-specific difficulty is less about the checkout screen and more about what the register can see. Buy-online-pickup-in-store and ship-from-store fulfillment need the register to read and write against the same order system the website uses. A return on an online purchase has to reconcile against that original order rather than creating an orphaned in-store credit. Gift cards and loyalty points need one balance across every channel, and for stores selling age-restricted goods, alcohol, tobacco, vape products, the register needs an ID verification step built into the sale itself, not a manager's judgment call at the counter.

We build POS systems that connect the register to the same order, inventory, and customer record the online store already uses, so an associate can fulfill an online order, process a cross-channel return, or look up a loyalty balance without stepping outside the POS to check a second system.

Requirements

## What retail & e-commerce teams need from it

- ### Omnichannel fulfillment at the register
Buy-online-pickup-in-store, ship-from-store, and endless-aisle ordering for out-of-stock sizes or colors all require the register to read and write against the same order and inventory system the website runs on, not a separate in-store-only database.
- ### Cross-channel returns reconciled against the original order
A customer returning an online purchase in person needs that return tied back to the original order record, refunding the original payment method and updating the same inventory and sales figures the ecommerce platform tracks, rather than creating a disconnected in-store credit.
- ### Unified gift card and loyalty balance across channels
A gift card purchased online or a loyalty point earned in store both need to be usable anywhere the brand sells, which means balances live in one shared system the register and the website both check in real time.
- ### Age verification for restricted goods at checkout
Retailers selling alcohol, tobacco, or vape products need an ID scan or manual age check built directly into the transaction flow for the specific SKUs that require it, rather than relying on an associate's judgment alone.
- ### Clienteling access to customer history at the register
An associate helping a repeat customer benefits from seeing that customer's past purchases, sizing, and preferences directly at the point of sale, which requires the register to query the same customer record the marketing and ecommerce systems maintain.

Scope

## Features we build

- ### Buy-online-pickup-in-store and ship-from-store
The register processes in-store pickup for online orders and can fulfill an online order from in-store stock, both reading from the same order and inventory system the website uses.
- ### Cross-channel returns and exchanges
A return for an item purchased online reconciles against its original order at the register, refunding correctly and updating inventory and sales reporting without creating a disconnected record.
- ### Unified gift card and loyalty redemption
Gift card balances and loyalty points are shared across online and in-store purchases, so a customer can redeem either one regardless of which channel they're buying through.
- ### Endless aisle ordering
When a size or color isn't in stock at the register, an associate can order it from another store's inventory or the warehouse for delivery, capturing a sale that would otherwise walk out the door.
- ### Clienteling and customer profile lookup
Associates pull up a customer's purchase history, sizing, and stated preferences directly at checkout, supporting a more informed sale without switching to a separate CRM screen.
- ### Age verification for restricted items
SKUs flagged as age-restricted trigger an ID scan or manual verification step at checkout, logged against the transaction for compliance review.
- ### Serialized and warrantied item tracking
High-value goods like electronics or jewelry are tracked by serial number from receiving through sale, tying a warranty or service record to the specific unit sold rather than the SKU generally.
- ### Tiered promotions and coupon stacking rules
Buy-one-get-one offers, tiered percentage discounts, and coupon stacking rules apply automatically at checkout according to the rules the merchandising team configures, rather than requiring a manager override for every combination.

Build vs buy

## When to build it and when to buy it

Shopify POS, Lightspeed Retail, and Square for Retail cover standard checkout, basic loyalty, and simple buy-online-pickup-in-store well, and a single-location or small multi-location retailer without complex omnichannel logic is usually better off starting there rather than funding a custom build.

Custom development earns its cost when omnichannel fulfillment needs to tie into a proprietary order management or ERP system those platforms can't reach cleanly, when clienteling needs to surface data from a CRM built specifically for the brand, or when serialized inventory and warranty tracking for high-value goods requires a data model those retail platforms don't support natively.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

Can customers buy online and pick up their order in store through the POS?

Yes, the register reads directly from the same order system the website uses, so an associate can look up a pickup order, confirm the customer's identity, and mark it fulfilled without checking a separate system or spreadsheet.

How does the POS handle a return for an item purchased online?

The return ties back to the original online order record at the register, refunding the original payment method and updating inventory and sales figures the same way the ecommerce platform tracks them, rather than creating a separate in-store credit that has to be reconciled manually later.

Can gift cards and loyalty points be redeemed across both online and in-store purchases?

Yes, gift card balances and loyalty points live in one shared system the register and the website both check in real time, so a customer can redeem either one no matter which channel they're buying through.

Does the POS support age verification for restricted items like alcohol or vape products?

Yes, SKUs flagged as age-restricted trigger an ID scan or manual verification step directly in the transaction flow, and that check is logged against the sale, rather than depending on an associate's judgment alone at checkout.

Can sales associates see a customer's purchase history at the register?

Yes, clienteling features let an associate pull up a customer's past purchases, sizing, and stated preferences directly at checkout, drawing from the same customer record the marketing and ecommerce systems maintain rather than a separate lookup.

Should we use Shopify POS or build a custom retail POS system?

Shopify POS, Lightspeed Retail, and Square for Retail handle standard checkout and basic omnichannel needs well for most single-location or small multi-location retailers. Build custom when fulfillment needs to integrate with a proprietary order management system, or when clienteling and serialized inventory tracking require a data model those platforms don't support.
