[How we work](https://arbocode.com/process)

A marketing site holds a visitor's attention for a few minutes. A web application has to last hours a day, every day, for users who need it to do their job. Our web application development services build around that difference: authenticated, data-heavy browser applications such as dashboards, customer portals, internal workflow tools and multi-tenant products, where permissions, data integrity and performance under real load matter more than landing page speed.

Our starting point is always the data model and the permission structure, because most web application problems trace back to one of the two: a schema that cannot represent an edge case the business actually has, or an access-control model bolted on after the fact. We design both up front, then build the interface around the workflows your users run every day rather than around a generic CRUD screen.

What ships is an application your engineering team can extend without us: typed, tested, documented, and built on infrastructure that scales with usage rather than needing a rewrite the first time traffic triples.

## Problems we are usually brought in to solve

- Our internal dashboard grinds to a halt once a table passes a few hundred thousand rows.
- We need one login that shows different data and different permissions depending on which customer or team the user belongs to.
- Engineers keep bolting features onto a codebase nobody designed for the scale we are at now.
- Our customer portal was a weekend project and now enterprise clients expect it to behave like real software.
- Reports that used to load in seconds now take minutes, and nobody trusts the numbers anymore.
- We need role-based permissions and audit logging and our current app was never built with either in mind.

What we deliver

## Web Application Development services

- ### Customer and Partner Portals
Authenticated portals where your customers or partners can view orders, submit requests, track status or manage their account, scoped so each account only ever sees its own data.
- ### Internal Dashboards and Admin Tools
Operational dashboards for support, finance and operations teams, built around the actions those teams take daily rather than a generic data table.
- ### Multi-Tenant Application Architecture
Data isolation, tenant-aware queries and role hierarchies designed so a single codebase can serve many customer organizations securely.
- ### Workflow and Approval Applications
Applications that move a request through defined states, assignment, approval, escalation, with a full history of who did what and when.
- ### Reporting and BI Interfaces
Query and reporting layers built to stay fast as data volume grows, including pre-aggregation and caching strategies where raw queries would be too slow.
- ### API and Backend Services for the Application
The backend, database schema and API layer the front end depends on, designed together with the interface rather than treated as an afterthought.
- ### Application Modernization
Rebuilding or re-architecting an existing web application whose data model, framework version or performance profile can no longer support the business.

You receive

## Deliverables

- A deployed application with staging and production environments under your control
- A documented data model and API
- Role-based access control matched to your organization's actual structure
- Automated tests covering the workflows the application exists to support
- Performance benchmarks for the data volumes you actually operate at
- Audit logging where the workflow requires an accountability trail
- The application's source code in your own repository from the first commit

How we work

## Our web application development process

1. ### Data model and permissions design
We design the schema and access-control model together, since retrofitting permissions onto a finished data model is where most web application rebuilds start.
2. ### Workflow mapping
Screens are built around the actions a user needs to take, approve, assign, escalate, export, rather than a generic list-and-detail pattern.
3. ### API and front-end build in parallel
The API contract is agreed early so front-end and backend work can proceed together instead of the interface waiting on the backend to finish first.
4. ### Load and permission testing
We test with data volumes and account structures close to your real usage, not a handful of seed records, to catch performance and access-control gaps before launch.
5. ### Staged rollout
For applications replacing an existing tool, we roll out to a pilot group of users before switching everyone over.
6. ### Handover and ongoing support
Documentation and a walkthrough for your engineering team, or continued support under a maintenance arrangement if your team prefers we keep operating it.

## Why Data Model and Permissions Come Before the Interface

Most web application rewrites are caused by a data model that cannot represent a case the business added after launch, or a permission system that was designed for one customer and now has to support dozens with different needs.

We spend real time on the schema and the access-control model before any screen is designed, because changing either one after the application is built means touching almost every part of the codebase. An interface built on a solid data model can be redesigned in weeks; a data model rebuilt under a finished interface usually cannot.

## Building for Multi-Tenant Access Without a Security Gap

A multi-tenant application has to guarantee that no query, no cached result and no export can ever return one customer's data to another customer's session. That guarantee has to be enforced at the data layer, not only checked in the interface, because a missed permission check in one screen is enough to leak data.

We build tenant isolation into the query layer itself, whether through row-level security, tenant-scoped database connections or a dedicated data-access layer that cannot be bypassed by a new screen someone adds later.

- Tenant isolation enforced at the data layer, not only in the interface
- Automated tests that specifically try to access another tenant's data
- Audit logging for who accessed or changed what, and when

## Keeping Dashboards Fast as Data Grows

A dashboard that is fast with a thousand rows of seed data and unusable with two million rows of production data was built without a plan for growth. We benchmark against realistic data volumes during the build, not after a customer complains, and design indexing, pre-aggregation and caching into the reporting layer from the start.

Where a raw query will never be fast enough at scale, we build a separate read path, a materialized view, a pre-computed summary table or a caching layer, rather than trying to optimize an approach that cannot work at your data volume.

Budget

## What drives cost and timeline

- ### Number of user roles and permission levels
An application with two roles, admin and user, is simpler to build and test than one with account-level, team-level and organization-level permissions.
- ### Data volume and query complexity
Dashboards over millions of rows need indexing, caching and sometimes a separate reporting store, which is real engineering work beyond the interface itself.
- ### Multi-tenancy requirements
Isolating data between customer organizations, whether by database, schema or row-level policy, is an architectural decision that shapes cost well beyond the UI.
- ### Integration with existing systems
Pulling data from or pushing data to an ERP, CRM or billing system adds integration and error-handling work per system connected.
- ### Real-time and concurrency needs
Applications where multiple users edit the same record at once need conflict handling that a simple form-based app does not.

FAQ

## Questions about Web Application Development

What counts as a web application versus a website?

A website is mostly public content that visitors read. A web application is a logged-in tool where users take actions, view data scoped to their account and rely on it to do their job daily. The engineering priorities are different: permissions, data integrity and performance under load matter more than page-load marketing metrics.

How do you keep customer data isolated in a multi-tenant application?

We enforce isolation at the data layer, through row-level security, tenant-scoped connections or a data-access layer that cannot be bypassed, rather than relying only on interface-level checks. We also write automated tests that specifically attempt to access another tenant's data as part of the test suite.

Our dashboard is slow once the data set gets large. Can you fix it without a full rewrite?

Often, yes. Slow dashboards are usually a query and indexing problem rather than a framework problem. We benchmark against your real data volume, add appropriate indexing or a pre-aggregated reporting layer, and only recommend a rewrite when the underlying data model cannot support the reporting you need.

Do you build the backend and API, or only the front end?

Both, and we design them together. The data model, API contract and interface depend on each other closely enough that treating the backend as someone else's problem tends to produce a front end that fights its own API.

How do you handle role-based permissions for different types of users?

We map out every role your application actually needs, admin, manager, individual contributor, external partner, and design the permission model before building screens, since retrofitting roles onto a finished application usually requires touching most of the codebase.

Can you migrate our existing web application to a new stack without downtime?

Yes, for most applications. We typically run the new system alongside the old one for a defined cutover window, migrate data in stages, and roll out to a pilot group of users before switching everyone over, which limits risk compared to a single hard cutover.

How long does it take to build a customer portal?

A portal with account-level access, a handful of core workflows and a couple of integrations typically takes ten to sixteen weeks. Multi-tenant portals with several permission tiers and heavier reporting needs usually run four to seven months.
