[How we work](https://arbocode.com/process)

A learning management system has to do two things at once. It must let someone build a course without a developer, and it must record what each learner did, in what order, and whether they passed. Standard platforms such as Moodle and Canvas handle standard course delivery well. A custom build pays off when the learning experience is itself the product, or when training must connect to certification and compliance workflows that a generic platform was not designed around.

We build LMS platforms for corporate training teams, education providers, and edtech products where course delivery is not a supporting feature but the core of what is being sold.

## Usually commissioned by

- Edtech companies where course delivery is the product itself, not an internal training tool
- Corporate training teams whose certification requirements do not fit cleanly into an off-the-shelf platform
- Organizations needing to serve multiple client companies from one platform with data kept separate between them
- Teams that outgrew a spreadsheet-and-email approach to tracking who completed required training

Scope

## Core features

- ### Course authoring and content structure
Instructors build courses from modules and lessons without touching code, organizing content into the sequence learners are meant to follow.
- ### SCORM and xAPI content support
Courses authored elsewhere in SCORM or xAPI format can be imported and tracked the same way as native content, which matters for organizations with an existing library of purchased training material.
- ### Quizzes and automatic grading
Assessments grade automatically for objective question types, giving learners immediate feedback and giving instructors a pass rate without manually reviewing every submission.
- ### Progress tracking and completion certificates
Every learner's progress through a course is tracked at the lesson level, with a certificate generated automatically on completion for the courses that require one.
- ### Cohort and group management
Learners can be grouped into cohorts with shared start dates, deadlines, and instructor assignments, which matters for corporate training rolled out department by department.
- ### Video hosting built for course content
Lesson videos stream through a delivery setup built for that purpose, with resume-from-where-you-left-off behavior rather than treating video as a generic file attachment.
- ### Discussion and social learning
Course-level discussion threads let learners ask questions and instructors respond in context, instead of routing every question through a separate email or ticket.
- ### SSO and HR system integration
Corporate deployments log in through the company's existing identity provider, and completion data can sync to an HR system to keep training records in the same place as other employee data.

Architecture

## Choices that shape the build

- ### SCORM and xAPI compliance for imported content
Organizations with an existing library of purchased courses need the platform to import and track that content correctly, which requires building to the SCORM or xAPI specification rather than a custom tracking format.
- ### Video delivery at scale
Video needs adaptive bitrate streaming and content delivery through a CDN once learner numbers grow, since serving video directly from application servers does not hold up under concurrent viewing.
- ### Accessibility of course content
Course players, quizzes, and video captions need to meet WCAG 2.2, which matters both for learners with disabilities and because many corporate and public sector buyers require it contractually.
- ### Multi-tenant architecture for multiple client organizations
Platforms serving more than one client company need data kept separate between tenants at the database level, with each tenant able to customize branding and course catalogs independently.
- ### FERPA and COPPA where students are involved
Platforms serving K-12 or higher education students need to handle student records under FERPA, and any platform serving children under 13 needs to account for COPPA's requirements around data collection.

Build vs buy

## When to build and when to buy

Moodle, Canvas, TalentLMS, and Docebo cover standard course delivery well. Moodle is a strong open-source option when you can host and maintain it yourself, Canvas is the standard in higher education, and TalentLMS or Docebo suit corporate training teams that want a managed SaaS platform without custom development.

Custom development is worth it when the learning experience itself is the product being sold, when certification workflows need to integrate tightly with a proprietary compliance system, or when multi-tenant requirements and branding needs go beyond what an off-the-shelf platform's white-labeling supports.

Delivery

## How delivery is phased

1. ### Define course structure and compliance needs
We map how courses need to be structured, which compliance requirements apply, such as SCORM support or FERPA, and whether the platform needs to serve more than one organization.
2. ### Build the authoring and delivery core
Course authoring, video delivery, and the learner-facing course player get built first, since every other feature depends on this core working reliably.
3. ### Add assessments, certificates, and integrations
Quizzes, automatic grading, certificate generation, and SSO or HR system integration get layered on once the core delivery experience is solid. This typically takes several weeks depending on integration count.
4. ### Pilot with a cohort and launch
A real cohort runs through the platform before a full rollout, since course pacing and grading edge cases show up faster with real learners than in internal testing.

FAQ

## Questions about Learning Management Systems

Should we build a custom LMS or use Moodle or Canvas?

Moodle and Canvas handle standard course delivery well and are the faster, cheaper option for most internal training or academic use. Build custom when the learning experience is your actual product, or when certification workflows and multi-tenant branding needs go beyond what those platforms support out of the box.

Does a custom LMS need to support SCORM or xAPI content?

It depends on whether you have or plan to buy course content authored elsewhere. Supporting SCORM or xAPI import lets you use existing third-party training libraries alongside content built natively in your platform, which most organizations with any purchased training material need.

Can an LMS issue certificates automatically on course completion?

Yes. Once a learner meets the completion criteria for a course, such as passing a final assessment, a certificate generates automatically with their name, the course title, and the completion date, without an administrator issuing it manually.

How do you handle video hosting for course content at scale?

Video streams through adaptive bitrate delivery over a content delivery network rather than being served directly from application servers, which keeps playback smooth as concurrent viewers increase and reduces load on the core platform.

Is a custom LMS FERPA compliant for student data?

A custom LMS can be built to handle student education records the way FERPA requires, including access controls and audit logging around who views a student's records. Compliance depends on how the system is built and operated, not on the platform being custom versus off-the-shelf.
