How we work

Carriers, managing general agents and brokers share one fault line. Policy, claims and underwriting data must travel between agency management systems, rating engines and carrier platforms that were never built to communicate directly. ACORD exists because each carrier once invented its own data format, and a surprising number still do around the edges.

We build policy administration modules, claims intake and adjudication tools, and underwriting workbenches that exchange data through ACORD messaging where a carrier supports it, and through direct API integration with Guidewire, Duck Creek or Applied Epic where it does not. Producer and policyholder portals sit on top of the same data layer, so an agent quoting a policy and a claims adjuster reviewing it are working from one source of truth.

We scope every integration against the specific carrier or MGA system you already run, rather than assuming a generic insurance stack, since the gap between what Guidewire promises out of the box and what a decade-old configuration actually returns is where most insurance software projects lose their timeline.

The problem

The hard parts of insurance software

  • Legacy policy administration systems resist change

Mainframe-era policy admin systems and heavily customized Guidewire or Duck Creek instances make even a small product change (a new endorsement type, a new rating factor) touch code nobody has opened in years.

  • Claims speed competes directly with fraud detection

Faster first notice of loss intake and faster settlement are the product promise, but each shortcut in verification is a lever a fraudulent claim can pull. The two goals have to be designed together from the first sprint.

  • ACORD compliance varies by trading partner

The ACORD standard defines the format, but not every carrier, agency management system or rating bureau implements every field the same way, so real-world integration still needs partner-specific mapping.

  • Regulation is set state by state

Rate filings, policy form approvals and claims handling rules are set at the state Department of Insurance level, so a national platform needs configuration, not hardcoded business rules, to vary by jurisdiction.

  • Underwriting data arrives from too many sources to normalize by hand

Risk data from LexisNexis, Verisk and ISO rating tables, motor vehicle records, and property data all use different identifiers and refresh schedules, which makes a single underwriting view hard to keep current.

What we build

Insurance systems we build

  • Policy administration systems

Quoting, binding, endorsements and renewals, built to extend or integrate with an existing Guidewire PolicyCenter or Duck Creek Policy instance rather than replace it outright.

  • Claims management and FNOL intake

First notice of loss capture across web, mobile and phone channels, routed into an adjudication workflow with fraud-scoring checkpoints before payout approval.

  • Underwriting workbenches

Risk scoring that pulls from LexisNexis, Verisk and internal loss history into one workbench, so an underwriter reviews a normalized risk picture instead of five separate reports.

  • Agent and broker portals

Producer-facing quoting tools, commission tracking and book-of-business dashboards that connect to agency management systems like Applied Epic or Vertafore AMS360.

  • ACORD data exchange layers

Message translation between ACORD XML/AL3 formats and your internal data model, with partner-specific field mapping documented so future integrations do not start from zero.

  • Premium billing and payment integration

Recurring premium collection, installment plans and payment integration that reconciles against the policy ledger, cutting the manual matching finance teams do at close.

Regulations and standards we design for

  • State Department of Insurance regulations and NAIC model laws governing rate filings, policy forms and claims handling practices.
  • HIPAA for accident and health lines that involve protected health information in claims or underwriting.
  • GLBA Safeguards Rule requirements for handling nonpublic personal financial information collected during underwriting.
  • Software architecture designed to support a SOC 2 Type II audit for platforms handling policyholder and claims data.
  • State-specific data breach notification laws, which set differing timelines and disclosure requirements after an incident.
  • GDPR and UK GDPR for carriers or MGAs underwriting risks in the EU and UK.

Platforms we integrate with

  • ACORD standard messaging (XML and AL3) for carrier and agency data exchange
  • Guidewire PolicyCenter and ClaimCenter APIs
  • Duck Creek Technologies policy and claims suites
  • Applied Epic and Vertafore AMS360 agency management systems
  • LexisNexis Risk Solutions for underwriting data
  • Verisk and ISO rating data services
  • DocuSign for policy and claims document signing
  • Stripe for premium payment collection

ACORD data exchange across carriers, MGAs and agents

The ACORD standard defines message formats for quoting, binding and claims, but implementation still varies enough between carriers that a working integration needs partner-specific field mapping, not just a schema validator. We build the exchange layer to accept both ACORD XML and the older AL3 format where legacy systems still send it, and we keep a mapping table per trading partner so onboarding a new carrier connection does not mean rewriting the core integration.

Where a carrier's ACORD implementation is incomplete or inconsistent, we build a fallback path (direct API calls, secured file transfer, or a manual reconciliation queue) rather than letting a mismatched field silently drop data.

Claims workflows from first notice of loss to settlement

We design FNOL intake to work across the channels claimants actually use, phone, web form and mobile upload for photos and documents, feeding into a single claims record. Fraud-scoring checkpoints run at intake and again before payout, using rules and, where volume justifies it, a model trained on your historical claims data, so speed and scrutiny apply at the right points in the process rather than uniformly across every claim.

Underwriting data from multiple risk bureaus in one workbench

Motor vehicle records, LexisNexis and Verisk risk data, and internal loss history all use different identifiers and refresh on different schedules. We build a normalization layer that resolves these into one risk profile per applicant, with source and freshness visible to the underwriter, so a stale data point does not get treated the same as a same-day pull.

FAQ

Insurance software FAQs

Can you integrate a new claims tool with our existing Guidewire ClaimCenter setup?

Yes. We work against Guidewire's published APIs and your specific ClaimCenter configuration, since most carriers have customized the base product enough that a generic integration plan does not hold. We start with an audit of your current configuration before scoping the connection.

How long does it take to build an ACORD-compliant data exchange layer?

A single carrier or agency management system connection typically takes six to ten weeks, including field mapping and message validation. Supporting multiple trading partners adds time proportional to how inconsistently each one implements the ACORD standard.

Do you build underwriting risk models or only the workbench interface?

Both, depending on your data. Where you have enough historical claims and underwriting outcomes, we build a risk-scoring model; where the data is too thin for that, we build a rules-based workbench that still normalizes bureau data into one view for the underwriter.

How do you handle claims fraud detection without slowing down legitimate claims?

We apply scoring at intake and again before payout rather than a single upfront check, so most claims move straight through and only flagged ones route to manual review. The scoring rules are tuned against your historical claims data rather than a generic industry threshold.

Can an agent portal connect to Applied Epic or Vertafore AMS360?

Yes. We build producer portals that read and write through the agency management system's API, so commission data, book-of-business figures and policy status stay consistent between the portal and the AMS instead of requiring a manual export.
