Why Data Model and Permissions Come Before the Interface
Most web application rewrites are caused by a data model that cannot represent a case the business added after launch, or a permission system that was designed for one customer and now has to support dozens with different needs.
We spend real time on the schema and the access-control model before any screen is designed, because changing either one after the application is built means touching almost every part of the codebase. An interface built on a solid data model can be redesigned in weeks; a data model rebuilt under a finished interface usually cannot.
